The company responsible for cargo handling at Belfast International Airport has announced plans to accelerate the digitisation of its operation.
PING Group has appointed Banbridge-based Ubloquity as part of the creation of a new dedicated digital centre of excellence at its Aldergrove headquarters.
A specialist in digital identity and distributed ledger technology, Ubloquity said the appointment will result in the creation of five specialist tech roles.
The Co Down company will deliver digital asset identification, authentication and traceability across PING’s growing airport operation, offering real-time asset management.
It follows the introduction of new EU regulations around product safety and traceability.
Under the Windsor Framework, the EU’s General Product Safety Regulation (GSPR) and the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), apply in Northern Ireland.
The ESPR introduces the concept of a digital product passport (DPP), which will be designed to trace a product through its entire life cycle.
A central database for storing product information is due to operational by the middle of 2026.
It’s part of an EU-wide effort to tackle things like fast fashion and throw away textiles.
“Our partnership with Ubloquity is a strategic step in future-proofing our business and that of our supply chain,” said PING Group chief executive, Jonny McKinny.
“The rollout of next-generation digital infrastructure and asset-level digital passports across landside and airside operations will provide real-time visibility, enhanced security, and end-to-end traceability.
“This will lay the foundation for more sustainable, transparent, and resilient logistics supply chains.”
Ubloquity founder Kieran Kelly said the PING Group centre of excellence will focus on creating a digital twin to support traceability across aerospace and defence components.
He said it will work towards zero-friction supply chain integration, AI-enabled asset monitoring, and support for export and compliance standards, aligned with international trade requirements and defence frameworks.
“For Ubloquity, this partnership with PING is about supporting their digital transformation and helping to drive adoption across the wider sector,” he said.
“We’ll act as an enabler to fast-track digitisation, reduce friction, increase automation, and deliver greater efficiencies across their growing operation.”
